Unforgettable Summer 2024: Fun-Filled Programs at Salmon Youth Centre

27/09/2024

Summer 2024 at Salmon Youth Centre was filled with energy, excitement, and unforgettable experiences. Here’s a look back at some of the fantastic programs, events, and achievements that made this summer one to remember:

German Exchange Project

For seven days, we had the pleasure of hosting a German youth exchange, welcoming young people from Langenhagen, Germany, and Bermondsey, London. Eight German participants, aged 14-17 (four girls and four boys), stayed at YHA Thameside, while seven local English participants (four girls and three boys) hosted them. The exchange aimed to build cross-cultural friendships, language skills, and shared exploration of London. It was a dynamic week full of sightseeing, club activities at Salmon, and shared meals. Both groups bonded, learned new phrases, and gained insights into each other’s cultures, making this exchange a huge success.

Summer Schemes and Clubs

Our 11-14s Weeklong Summer Scheme was buzzing with energy, with about 30 young people joining us each day and 61 in total over the week, including many newcomers. Activities like swimming at Downside Fisher, adventure golf, and inclusive sessions for young people with additional needs ensured that everyone had a fantastic experience. Healthy eating discussions were also a valuable part of the program.

The 6-10s Summer Scheme Week was equally vibrant, welcoming 95 different young people, with an average of 55 attendees daily, including 8 participants with additional needs. A talented team of staff, young leaders, and trainees led engaging activities like the giant swing, daily talent shows, and trips on the Horrible Histories Thames river cruise and to Southwark Park.

Our 14+ Evening Club Sessions offered a more relaxed atmosphere with basketball, gym time, and creative opportunities. We were delighted to involve our German visitors in one of these sessions, where they enjoyed using our music and art facilities to record tracks and paint.

New Day Festival

A group of 16 young people embarked on an adventurous trip to the New Day Festival in Norfolk, joining a larger group of 70 young people from Bermondsey churches. Over five nights and six days, they set up camp, attended big tent meetings, engaged in games, and explored their faith journeys together. The scorching weather didn’t dampen their spirits, as they showed great resilience and camaraderie.

Sports Tournaments

Salmon teams shone in a series of London Youth sports tournaments! Our under-14 girls’ football team advanced to the finals, narrowly missing the top spot by one goal, while learning valuable lessons about resilience and teamwork. The under-15 boys’ football team, despite initial nerves, gained confidence as the tournament progressed, showcasing great sportsmanship. The under-15 basketball team also had their first taste of competition in a 3 v 3 format at the Copper Box Arena, gaining invaluable experience in game strategy and teamwork.

It’s been a summer of growth, fun, and new friendships at Salmon Youth Centre. We can’t wait for what next year will bring!
